Congress President Sonia Gandhi has developed a fresh health setback amid being treated for the Covid-19 viral infection. She has tested positive for the pandemic earlier this month and she was admitted to Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi on June 12 in the midst of receiving summons from the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case.

The Congress party has on Friday said that Sonia Gandhi was detected with a lower respiratory tract infection after being admitted to Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi. She has been under close observation and treatment. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said Sonia Gandhi was admitted to the hospital on June 12 after bleeding from her nose following a recent Covid infection.

In a statement, Ramesh said, "She was immediately put under treatment and underwent a related follow-up procedure yesterday morning." He further said that a fungal infection in her lower respiratory tract was also detected upon admission. "She is currently being treated for it along with other post-Covid symptoms. She continues to be under close observation and treatment", Ramesh added.

Enforcement Directorate has already issued summon to Sonia Gandhi and after she was hospitalized, the Central agency has deferred the schedule and directed her to appear before the department on June 23 for questioning. Her son and former Congress president Rahul Gandhi is already being questioned by the probe agency and his next appearance before the ED has been scheduled for next Monday.

Amid the consecutive interrogation, Rahul Gandhi had visited his mother at the hospital and while he was scheduled to appear before the ED on Friday, he has appealed for an exemption from the hearing on Friday as he had to stay with his ailing mother. Based on his request, the ED has deferred the interrogation for next Monday.

Jairam Ramesh, who replaced Randeep Surjewala as the Congress Chief Spokesperson, has released his statement on Twitter. Meanwhile, the Congress party has been staging huge protests across the country against the BJP regime for questioning Rahul Gandhi incessantly, for consecutive days.
