The Tamil Nadu government has instructed 27 District Collectors to enforce the Standard Operating Procedures to handle disasters, beef up the district machinery and take adequate preparedness measures.

As far as the rainfall in North India is concerned, at least 18 people have died due to rain-related incidents as of Sunday in several regions.

The continuous spells have led the government to declare holiday for schools on Monday in six northern districts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai.

The weather department has forecast that the sky condition in Chennai and its suburbs would remain cloudy.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has predicted that the month of September is likely to get more intense spells.

On Sunday, Chennai and its suburbs had rainy dusk with incessant rainfall and thunderstorms. The sudden downpour has caused major disruption and several areas in the city were waterlogged.

The country's premier weather watchdog has said that this pattern of rainfall would remain from August 1- Monday to August 4 - Thursday.
