Tamil YouTuber Saattai Duraimurugan gets arrested: What's the friction?

Tamil YouTuber Saattai Duraimurugan was arrested by the Tamil Nadu Police in the wee hours of Monday in Kanyakumari under the grounds of making derogatory remarks against Chief Minister MK Stalin. Duraimurugan, who has been active in Seeman's Naam Tamilar party, was sent to judicial custody till October 25. 

The arrest has come after the YouTuber had attracted resentments from the DMK cadres with several complaints getting filed against him. According to reports, Duraimurugan was speaking at a protest that was organized by the Naam Tamilar party in Thuckalay in the Kanyakumari district. The protest was held to voice against the drilling of mountains in the district and it was led by Seeman. The protests raised slogans against the Tamil Nadu government and accused it of failing to curb such drillings and Seeman said that the regime is not preventing the natural resources. 

Saattai Duraimurugan took the podium after Seeman and began the speech that eventually put him in trouble. Inviting controversy, Duraimurugan had made disparaging remarks against MK Stalin and claimed that the rocks from the drilling exercise are being sent to Kerala. While he went on air more such remarks, party's leader Seeman was seen welcoming his comments as Duraimurugan speech had drawn major attention. As his speech had attracted the wrath of DMK, the local unit of the state ruling party had filed a complaint against Duraimurugan to the Kanyakumari police. 

Several DMK cadres took online and the streets and demanded the police to arrest Duraimurugan, who has been one of the controversial YouTubers in the state. DMK MP of Dharmapuri, Senthil Kumar had issued a statement condemning Duraimurugan and besides slamming the YouTuber for his comments against the Chief Minister, the parliamentarian had also said that Duraimurugan had released a video that defamed late DMK President M Karunanidhi. 

Senthil Kumar had moved his demand to Dharmapuri Police Superintendent and he demanded to block his YouTube and social media handles. As the outrage had grown against Duraimurugan, the Tamil Nadu police had arrested the YouTuber in the wee hours of Monday. According to reports, Saattai Duraimurugan was on his way to Chennai from Kanyakumari and the police had blocked him near Tirunelveli and arrested him. A case was booked against him under sections 143, 153, 153A, 505 (2), 506 (1), and 269 of IPC.

After arresting him, the police had produced Saattai Duraimurugan before the Padmanabhapuram Court and after the hearing, the Judge had directed the police to lodge Duraimurugan under judicial custody till October 25. With the directive, the police had lodged the YouTuber in Nanguneri prison. It must be noted that Duraimurugan had faced an arrest in June this year in Trichy after he was accused of threatening an employee. Later he was released and after four months, he has again been arrested for degrading the Chief Minister.
