From Thala Ajith to Suriya...Kollywood celebrities contribute to TN's COVID-19 relief fund!

Ever since Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has appealed to the public to contribute to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund to aid the government's battle in curbing the COVID-19 pandemic, several people from celebrities to entrepreneurs have been lending their contributions to help the state in addressing the health crisis amid the rampant spread of the horrendous second wave of the coronavirus. 

On May 11, the Chief Minister has requested both public and private organizations to help the Tamil Nadu government in responding to the crisis by donating to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund (CMPRF). Following the announcement, the donations have been pouring towards the relief fund, and earlier, the DMK trust has donated Rs 1 crore to the relief fund and dozens of Kollywood celebrities are lending their contributions. 

On Friday, Actor Ajith has contributed Rs 25 lakhs to CMPRF aiding the government in battling the pandemic. Ajith's Manager Suresh Chandra had confirmed that Ajith had donated to the public fund. Taking to Twitter, Suresh Chandra wrote, "Shri Ajith Kumar has donated twenty-five lakhs to the Chief Minister relief fund today via bank transfer." 

Significantly, Ajith had in April last year made a donation worth Rs 1.25 crore to PM Cares Fund and Rs 50 lakh to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Relief Fund. He also had Rs 25 lakh to the Film Employees Federation of South India. Last year, actor Vijay had also contributed Rs 1.3 crore to various government funds. Days after Stalin has announced, Ajith has now contributed to the fund for the second consecutive year.

Apart from Ajith, Superstar Rajinikanth's daughter Soundarya has contributed Rs 1 crore to the CMPRF on Friday. According to reports close to the developments, Rajinikanth's daughter Soundarya has donated Rs 1 crore to Tamil Nadu COVID-19 relief funds on behalf of her husband Vishagan's pharma company. Veteran director AR Murugadoss too has donated Rs 25 lakhs to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund. 

Earlier, reputed actor Sivakumar and his sons' actors Suriya and Karthi had met Chief Minister MK Stalin at the Chief Secretariat on May 12 and handed over a cheque worth Rs 1 crore. The Sivakumar family has also urged everyone to contribute to the relief fund. Several social media users had commended the celebrities for contributing to the relief fund. 

Besides the celebrities, several businessmen and educationalists including Jayachandran Textiles and Sathyabama University had contributed to the Chief Minister's fund. On Thursday, Tamil Nadu has reported 30,621 fresh COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day rise recorded by the state since the outbreak began. The state has reported 19,287 discharges and 297 deaths on Thursday. Overall, the state has recorded 14,99,485 COVID-19 cases so far as of Thursday of which 1,83,772 are active, 12,98,945 have been discharged, and 16,768 had succumbed to the viral infection.
