The much-awaited sequel to Mani Ratnam’s epic historical drama Ponniyin Selvan: 1 hit the screens on April 28, 2023, and received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film, based on the Tamil classic by Kalki Krishnamoorthy, narrates the story of Arulmozhi Varman, who goes on to become Rajaraja I, the greatest ruler of the Chola empire of south India.

While many praised the performances, the music, the cinematography and the production design of the film, some were disappointed with the way Mani Ratnam deviated from the source material and gave an alternate ending to the epic saga.

Some fans have also defended Mani Ratnam’s choice and said that he has given an optimistic ending which better suits for the cinematic world. Mani Ratnam in previous interviews also mentioned that he has taken creative liberties from Kalki’s material to present it cinematically.

Among the many admirers of the film was veteran actor Kamal Haasan, who watched the film and gave an interview to the media. He praised Mani Ratnam for his courage and vision in making a film that celebrates the pride of Tamil cinema and the pride of Tamil people.

"There are varying perceptions of every work. There are always contrasting takes on screen. Even if it is in this movie, seeing so much love for it, is great. In order to honor the pride of Tamil cinema and the pride of the Tamil people, a film of exceptional bravery must be crafted. Kudos to Mani Ratnam , the hero who took it on, and the star-studded cast who backing him up." he said.

Ponniyin Selvan: 2 is produced by Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies. The film has been released in multiple languages including Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. The film minted Rs. 200 across worldwide by its fourth day of release.
