TN Govt to meet the religious leaders - Will temples and worship places get re-opened?

The Tamil Nadu state government will be convening a meet with the religious leaders in the state on Wednesday to address their demands on asking the government to permit the resumption of prayers at the religious places and the places of worship amid the rapid spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.

According to the reports, Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Shanmugam would be tabling a meet with the religious leaders at the Chief Secretariat on Wednesday during which the stakeholders would exchange their views on the resumption of temples and other religious places and this meet would be convened at the high time when the state government hasn't poured relaxations on the religious places in the fifth phase of the lockdown.

In the fifth phase of the lockdown, the Center has permitted the resumption of religious places across the country from June 8. However, the Tamil Nadu government has barred the re-opening in the state until further notice, presumably till June 30. The religious leaders have been demanding the government to re-open the religious places which have been shut for over two months in the wake of the lockdown.

The religious leaders claimed that the government must allow people to offer prayers at the religious places with the restrictions and social distancing norms. Last week, the members of the Hindu Munnani had held protests to urge the government to re-open the temples across the state.

They protested in front of the major temples in the state and called the government to address their demand. The spiritual organization has claimed that spirituality will give the necessary strength for people at this difficult time and asked the government to open the temples. However, the government has kept the restrictions amid the outbreak.

When the government closed the temples on March 19 to contain the spread of the pandemic, the Chief Secretary has tabled the discussions with the representatives of all religions on the government's directive of shutting down the religious places in the wake of the outbreak.
