TN Police file a case against DMK President MK Stalin and senior party leaders: Here's why!

Tamil Nadu Opposition leader and DMK President MK Stalin has been booked by the state police under the grounds of organizing the Grama sabha meeting across the state, which the government has recently canceled in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. Along with Stalin, the police had also booked senior DMK leaders Duraimurugan, EV Velu, and Kanimozhi. 

According to reports, the Tamil Nadu government has suspended the Grama Sabha conference, which was scheduled to be held on October 2, owing to the spread of the pandemic. The decision of the government had drawn massive flak with the farmers' associations across Tamil Nadu had held protests on Friday condemning the decision of the government. 

DMK leaders had taken part in the protests and accused the state government of canceling the grama sabha and claimed that the government has stopped the meetings to prevent the sabha in discussing the resolutions passed against the three farm bills in the meetings. 

The DMK party had organized Makkal Sabhai Kottam (People's Sabha) across the state as an alternative for the grama sabha and adopted resolutions against the three farm bills. Later, under the grounds of violating the order and COVID-19 preventive measures by conducting People's Sabha, the police had booked a case against DMK President MK Stalin. 

According to reports, the Tiruvallur district police had filed a case against about 100 people including DMK leaders MK Stalin, Durai Murugan, EV Velu, and Kanimozhi. The leaders have been booked for holding the meet and violating the COVID-19 measures. The complaint was given by the officials from the Revenue Department following which the case has been filed. 

DMK President MK Stalin, who led the meeting in Tiruvallur, had voiced against the government's action. By claiming that the DMK has held the meeting to safeguard the farmers and agriculture, Stalin stated that he has demanded the government to withdraw the acts. Apart from the DMK, actor turned politician Kamal Haasan has also slashed the ruling ADMK government for canceling the grama sabha in the state. 

According to reports, the grama sabha meeting will be usually held four times a year across the nation on January 26 - Republic Day, May 1- Labor Day, August 15 - Independence Day, and on October 2- Gandhi Jayanthi. The village meeting will be an exercise for a grass-roots level democracy. Reacting to the allegations leveled by Stalin, Senior Tamil Nadu Minister Jayakumar denied that the grama sabhas were canceled with a political motive.
