TN's Tsunami survivor Sowmya, who was raised by J Radhakrishnan IAS, gets married at 22!

Thanks to Tamil Nadu Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan IAS for taking better care of the children who survived and turned into orphans after the 2004-hit Tsunami, that devasted and killed thousands of lives in the eastern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. Several children had lost their parents and taken refuge in government homes and nearly 18 years since the catastrophe took their loved ones, one of the survivors had got married on Sunday- February 6.

The wedding had held in Nagapattinam and it was presided over by Tamil Nadu Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan. The Nagapattinam district had faced the worst devastations in Tamil Nadu due to Tsunami and the memory still haunts thousands as a nightmare. While thousands of lives were lost during the disaster, the then state government had opened a home named Annai Sathya Government Home for Children.

The children who had lost their family members were admitted to the home and one of them was the then 5-year-old Sowmya. During Tsunami, she had lost her parents and was found from debris in Velakanni. Sowmya had grown up under the guardianship of Radhakrishnan IAS. Now at the age of 22, Sowmya has got married on Sunday and Radhakrishnan and his entire family had graced the occasion and wished the couple.

The in-charge of the home has said that whenever Radhankrishnan visits Nagapattinam, he would be stopping at the home and would meet all children. The in-charge had said that all the children had grown up and some of them even got married. Sowmya left the home to pursue BA in Economics. Her education was supported by a child welfare committee member - Malarvizhi and late social worker Suriyakala.
