US Elections: For the first time, America elects a transgender to the senate! Know about her here

In a historical breakthrough to the transgender community in the United States, the country has elected the transgender for the first time to the state senate in what has become one of the remarkable feats amid the neck-and-neck battle for the US Presidential race, where incumbent Trump and Democrat Joe Biden have been bracing up for the uncertain outcome and a longer delay in resolving the votes.

Democrat Sarah McBride has become the first transgender woman in the United States to get elected to the state senate. She has won the race for Senate in the state of Delaware, the home state of Joe Biden. McBride had defeated Republican contender Steve Washington to win the seat. In the tightly fought race, McBride had won the Democratic district stretching from Northern Wilmington to the Pennsylvania border.

Though there are a handful of transgender legislators in the country, McBride is the first transgender to get elected to the state senate. According to reports, McBride interned at the White House when Barack Obama was the President and she made history at the 2016 Democratic National Convention as the first openly transgender person to speak at a major party convention.

McBride (30) was the former student body president at American University and she entered politics as a volunteer for Matt Denn, former legal counsel to Delaware Governor, during his successful campaign for insurance commissioner in 2004. Deen had later served as lieutenant governor and attorney general and he also had worked with McBride's father at a Wilmington law firm known for its close ties to the Democratic party establishment.

Following that, McBride had worked on the campaigns of former Governor Jack Markell and former state Attorney General Beau Biden, the elder son of Joe Biden. She came into the race of Senate after longest-serving legislator in Delaware history Harry McDowell announced his retirement. McDowell had served as the Delaware state senator since 1976 and after his retirement, he had endorsed McBride, who had now succeeded him.

When her candidacy was announced, she got national attention and her campaign had generated more than USD 270,000 in donations from across the country. Following the victory, McBride said, "I think tonight's results demonstrate what I've known my entire life, which is that the residents of this district are fair-minded, and they're looking at candidates' ideas and not identity. It is my hope that a young LGBTQ kid here in Delaware or really anywhere in this country can look at the results and know that our democracy is big enough for them, too".

After she sworn-in, she will become the highest-ranking elected transgender official in the country. She had played a crucial role in the fight for protection for LGBTQ rights and anti-discrimination in Delaware and she also has campaigned for the Equality Act, which Joe Biden assured that he would pass the act in 100 days if he gets elected as the next US President.

In September this year, McBride won a democratic state Senate primary in Delaware and now she has won the election and became the first transgender person in the US to get elected to the state senate. Taking to Twitter, Sarah McBride released her speech after the victory and said, "I'm so excited to build our future together".
