The NIA has registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the Arms Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against Adhilingam and five others. The agency suspects that the contraband was smuggled from Iran or Pakistan via Sri Lanka.

However, Varalakshmi has clarified that she has no connection with Aadhilingam, who worked for her but quit five years ago. She said that the NIA officials made an inquiry regarding him only at her mother’s place. She added that no one called her for investigation.

Varalakshmi is a popular actress in Tamil and Telugu cinema, who has acted in films like Sarkar, Maari 2, Sandakozhi 2 and Krack. She is also the daughter of veteran actor and politician Sarathkumar. She took to Twitter to share her statement and requested the media to refrain from spreading false news. She wrote, β€œAll the news information circulating mentioning that I have been summoned by the NIA relating to a case involving Mr. Adilingam are false and mere rumors. No such Summons have been issued. No requests for personal appearance anywhere has been made,"

She further mentioned, "Mr. Adilingam had worked with me only for a brief period for 3 years ago as a freelance manager. During this period I was also simultaneously working with many other freelance managers. After histenure we've not had any association or communication with each other till date,"

I am equally shocked at the news. I would be happy to be out of assistance to the government in anyway possible. It's disappointing that celebrities are being used and pulled into news these days without days without any truth or clarifications from the involved persons", she added.
