'Varane Avashyamund' - Dulquer's clarification and Seeman's demand! What's in it?

Varane Avashyamund is Dulquer Salmaan's latest movie that was released a few days ago on Netflix and despite being released on OTT platform, it has got good critics and audience in Kerala whereas, in Tamil Nadu, the movie has been caught up with the controversy from the Tamil viewers and the political parties who had taken a harsh stand against the Malayali actor.

It all began with the joke in the movie. According to Dulquer, who produced the movie, the joke is a reference to a famous dialogue from the Malayam comedy Pattanapravesham, but for most of the Tamil viewers, the movie has deliberately attempted to insult the LTTE Chief by naming a dog in the film as Prabhakaran.

The controversy around the movie has birthed on social media after people highlighted the movie's promo which says - "What's the funniest dog name you have heard? Ours is definitely Prabhakaran". By upholding the statement what they believed as insulting Prabhakaran, most people, apart from accusing Dulquer, went on to trend the hashtags like #ThatDogIsMammootty. Dulquer is the son of veteran actor Mammooty and it was seen as a direct attack against him.

After the movie got different grounds in Tamil Nadu among the Tamil viewers, Dulquer Salmaan and Director Anoop Sathyan had directly explained the context in which the name appears. Dulquer has issued an apology for all those who got offended by the joke and stated that the sequence in the movie was based on the direct reference from the 1988 Malayalam movie Pattanapravesham and not with the intention to refer or insult LTTE leader Prabhakaran. The actor claimed that most people have been reacting without watching the film and are trying to spread hate.

The director claimed that 'Prabhakaran' is a very common name in Kerala and he was very conscious towards making it as a harmless joke. However, the controversy still persists in Tamil Nadu as Naam Tamilar party has condemned the movie team for misusing Prabhakaran's name and demanded the actor to remove that clip from the movie.

The party's Chief Co-ordinator Seeman has issued a statement in which he said that the clarification from the movie director of claiming 'Prabhakaran' as a common name in Kerala is unacceptable and the movie team should have analyzed the current situation before referring the sequence from the old movie that was released in 1988. It is welcoming that Dulquer Salmaan had issued an apology after facing strong opposition from the Tamil viewers.

However, Seeman demanded that the actor must remove the controversial scene until then the opposition from the Tamil viewers against the movie would continue and he further asked the movie team to understand the pained emotions of Tamil people and it has to ensure that no such sequence and controversial scenes have its place in Malayalam movies in future.
