Veteran Tamil comedy actor passes away in Chennai due to COVID-19!

Veteran Tamil comedy actor Joker Thulasi has passed away on Sunday in Chennai due to the COVID-19 viral infection. As a prominent face in the Tamil cinema industry, Thulasi had been active in Kollywood for more than four decades since 1976. His demise has become one of the losses of the industry succumbing to the pandemic.

Apart from appearing on the big screens, Thulasi has become a household name across and beyond the state for his roles in soap operas on various television channels. He had acted nearly in ten TV serials. Thulasi made his acting debut in the Tamil film 'Ungalil Oruthi' directed by Devaraj-Mohan released on April 11, 1976. 

Thulasi has made his debut as a lead actor in the Tamil film 'Maruthu Pandi' along with Ramki and Seetha, directed by Manoj Kumar. He had appeared in some well-known films such as 'Thamizhachi', 'Ilaignar Ani', 'Udan Pirappu', 'Avathara Purushan', and 'Mannai Thottu Kumbidanum'. His performances in many films had drawn him the reputation and his acting in 'Thirumathi Palanisamy', starred by Sathyaraj and Sukanya, had poured him a huge commendation. 

Thirumathi Palanisamy was released in 1992 and it had become one of the best films of the year. Thulasi was born in Chennai and before entering the cinema industry, he was performing as a stage actor and he was the first actor in the Kanmani theatre troupe in Chennai. Though he stayed off from the big screens from 2004, he acted in TV serials telecasted in various Tamil channels. 

His notable serials include, 'Kolangal', 'Vani Rani', Keladi Kanmani', 'Muthaaram', 'Kasthuri', 'Naanal', 'Madhavi', and 'Azhagu'.  He had acted in 33 Tamil films and his last was 'Aai' starred by Sarathkumar and Namitha and released in 2004. Thulasi has recently tested positive for the COVID-19 viral infection and was getting treated at a private hospital in Chennai.

However, Thulasi had breathed his last on Sunday due to the pandemic and ever since the news of his demise broke out, several fans and fraternities are paying tribute to the deceased actor. Popular actor Radikaa Sarathkumar, who worked in Thulasi in Vani Rani serial, took to Twitter and wrote, "Very saddened to hear of the passing of Joker Thulasi, a very wonderful person, has been in theatre &movies for many decades. Sends me messages every day with positive thoughts. Share working memories of him in #vaanirani, will miss his childlike enthusiasm."

Veteran actor Mohan Raman had also expressed his tribute to Thulasi. Taking to Twitter, Raman wrote, "RIP - " Joker " Thulasi. Has been acting since the mid-70s. A very affable person, deeply interested in Astrology etc. I pray for his Athma to attain Sadhgathi. Did many films and TV serials together. I pray his family finds the strength to bear this loss. Aum Shanthi."
