Vetrimaaran, the acclaimed filmmaker who has won multiple National Awards, has once again proved his mettle with his latest movie Viduthalai Part 1. The movie, which stars Vijay Sethupathi and Soori in the lead roles, has received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike for its gripping portrayal of a tribal rebellion against corporate exploitation.

The movie, which was released in theatres on March 31, 2023, has now made its way to the OTT platform ZEE5 on April 28, 2023. The movie is available in both Tamil and Telugu languages, with the latter version titled Vidudala Part 1.

What makes this OTT release special is that the viewers can watch the director’s cut version of the movie, which is uncut and extended by 30 minutes. This is the first time in Tamil cinema history that a movie has been released in two different versions - one for theatres and one for OTT.

It's worth noting that the film's associate director Jagadeesa Pandiyan said that the film underwent 200 edits before it was released on the big screen, and said that the film watched in theatres is the 200th version and the OTT version will be a different version of the film, where the film will be the same and there will be additions.

Viduthalai Part 1 is based on the short story Thunaivan by B. Jeyamohan, which narrates the story of a police officer who tries to capture a separatist leader named Perumal Vaathiyaar, played by Vijay Sethupathi.

The movie has been praised for its realistic and raw depiction of the struggles and atrocities faced by the tribal people who are fighting for their land and rights against powerful forces. The movie also showcases the stunning performances of Soori and Vijay Sethupathi, who have shed their usual image and delivered nuanced and intense roles.

Viduthalai Part 1 is the first part of a two-part series that spans five hours. The second part is expected to release later this year and will reveal more about Perumal Vaathiyaar’s backstory and his ideology.
