After Sourav Ganguly's three-year term as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expired, former Indian cricketer Roger Binny was named as the new president on Tuesday - October 18th. The power transition has drawn major national attention in the midst of growing talks that Ganguly's term wasn't extended after he refused to join the BJP.

According to the sources, BJP was mulling fielding Ganguly as the party's face in West Bengal to defeat Mamata Banerjee. However, the legendary cricketer refused to foster BJP's agenda and it was said that he would be removed from the post of BCCI president. The development has attracted a voice of support from Mamata Banerjee who slammed the BJP for its conduct against Ganguly.

As expected, Ganguly was removed from the post and he has been replaced by 67-year-old Roger Binny, a former Indian cricketer who was part of the 1983 Cricket World Cup winning squad of India. As Binny is appointed as the 36th President of BCCI, Ganguly's first reaction after the appointment has been going viral. Extended his wishes to the incoming chief, Ganguly said that the new office-bearers are committed to taking the legacy forward.

On Tuesday, Ganguly told ANI, "I wish Roger (Binny) all the best. The new group will take this forward. BCCI is in great hands. Indian cricket is strong so I wish them all the luck." The BCCI was established in 1928 and Ganguly was elected as the President of BCCI in October 2019. His successor Roger Binny had served as the President of the Karnataka Cricket Association before being elevated to the apex body.

It is pertinent to note that former Indian cricketer Stuart Binny is the son of Roger Binny. The latter's appointment as the BCCI President was made at the 91st Annual General Meeting of the BCCI that was held on Tuesday - October 18 in Mumbai. In the meeting, the following members were elected as the new office bearers of the BCCI - President: Roger Binny, Vice President: Rajeev Shukla, Secretary: Jay Shah, Joint Secretary: Devajit Saikia, Treasurer: Ashish Shelar.

Earlier, Ganguly expressed his thoughts on his tenure as the BCCI President. Speaking at an event, Ganguly said, "I was the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal for five years. I have been president of BCCI for years. After all these terms, you have to leave and go. As an administrator, you have to contribute a lot and make things better for the team. Me being a player, who was around for a long time, understood it."

"I enjoyed my time as an administrator thoroughly. You cannot play forever and you cannot remain in administration forever", Ganguly added. It was reported that Ganguly was offered the post of IPL Chairman, however, he denied to take up the offer. Ganguly will be contesting for the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal and the polls will be held on October 31.
