In May 2020, Boney Kapoor had purchased the remake rights of the Hindi movie 'Article 19' in Tamil and the principal photography began in April 2021. The title 'Nenjukku Needhi' was named after the autobiography of Udhayanidhi's grandfather M Karunanidhi. The movie was initially slated for a release in March 2022. However, it was deferred to avoid clashes with the movies like Etharkkum Thunindhavan and Radhe Shyam.ย
