After playing as iconic Jayalalithaa in the movie 'Thalaivi', Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has now come up with yet another spectacular project in which she plays as Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India. Titled 'Emergency', her new movie has been made as a biopic of Indira Gandhi and her tumultuous tenure in the office.
Notably, this movie is directed by Ranaut herself and she announced this project last year. On Wednesday- July 14, she has shared a poster and a short video of the movie on Instagram. She wrote, "Presenting Emergency first look! Portraying one of the most powerful and controversial women in the history of the world...Emergency shoot begins." The update has turned heads and has caught into the wave of virality and has garnered a good reception from the fans.
In the video, we can see Kangana getting a call from the then US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, asking if American President Richard Nixon can address her as ‘Ma’am’ instead of the usual sir. Kangana, as Indira, takes a beat and says yes, but then turns to her secretary and asks him to inform the US President that everyone in her office refers to her as ‘Sir.’
The intriguing biopic has been made under her own production house, 'Manikarnika Flims'. Earlier, one of her updates on this film mentioned that her transformation of Indhira Gandhi has done by David Malinowski, who was an Oscar and BAFTA-winning makeup artist for Darkest Hour (2017), World War Z (2013) and The Batman (2022).
Earlier in an interview with a news agency, Kangana said, “Pleased to wear director’s hat again, after working on Emergency for more than a year I finally figured no one can direct it better than me. Collaborating with fabulous writer Ritesh Shah, even if it means sacrificing on various acting assignments I am determined to do it, my excitement is high. This is going to be a tremendous journey, my leap to another league Emergency Indira.”
The Emergency is one of the most controversial periods of independent India's history. It was a 21-month period from 1975 to 1977 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency across the country. Kangana had previously assumed the director's chair for her 2019 movie Manikarnika. The upcoming biopic is one of the most controversial subjects and hence the movie will be a hugely anticipated one among her fans.
