It has been reported that while the rest of the neighboring states had implemented the amended penalties of Motor Vehicles Act, the state of Tamil Nadu is still under the stage to finalize the implementation which the state government authorities have cited that the decision will be taken after the revised penalties are reviewed by the Chief minister's office.
They further cited that the provisions for implementation of the Act in the state have been resting on the table of Chief minister since he has been camped his maiden international visits and after the Chief minister had returned to the state, the officials have said that the amended Motor Vehicles Act will be implemented in the state soon. The reports further stated that the state government will most likely plan to revise the excessive penalties in some specific offences.

The reports had further indicated that the state government will flag over 26 clauses in the Motor Vehicles Act across the state in ensuring to regulate the traffic offences and violations while the amendment passed by the Central government carries about 63 clauses in the Motor Vehicles Act,1988.
The reports added that the state government will construct to levy penalties for the major traffic offences including rash driving, unwanted racing, driving without wearing helmets and safety belts and driving under alcoholic influence as these are the reasons due to which the roads of Tamil Nadu had accounted for series accidents and loss of lives.
Speaking about the on ground situation, the traffic police official had said that their department is yet to be issued with the government order to implement new penalties for the cases which have to be levied with spot fine while for the cases related to drunken driving, the accused will be produced before mobile courts and magistrates who will be imposed a fine and the revised fine for drunken driving is Rs 16,000.

In its first parliamentary session after forming the government, the BJP led Central government had passed amendments with 93 clauses in the Motor Vehicles Act last month which had issued directives on imposing fines for road traffic violations, analyzing vehicle fitness and implementing national transport policy. Out of these 93 clauses, 63 clauses were came into effect from September 1st, 2019 and the state of Tamil Nadu is one of the states along with Telangana and Chhattisgarh which have yet to be implemented with the revised penalties for traffic offences.
