Why former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh was arrested?

Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh was on Sunday arrested in Haryana. Though it was a brief arrest as he was awarded bail later, the development had attracted huge attention from across the country. The cricketer was arrested for making casteist remarks and was then released on bail in compliance with the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

According to PTI, Yuvraj Singh was accused of making casteist remarks against cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal during an Instagram chat last year. Following his remarks, Rajat Kalsan, an advocate, had filed a complaint against Yuvraj Singh last year in which he alleged that the cricketer's comment had hurt the sentiments of the Dalit community and a large number of people had watched the video on social media.

Based on his complaint, the Haryana police had filed an FIR against Yuvraj Singh earlier this year under sections of the IPC and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The complaint was filed at the Hansi Police Station in Hisar. However, Yuvraj Singh had approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the FIR and sought a directive to repeal the case filed against him based on the complaint from Rajat Kalsan.

Yuvraj Singh was on the video chat with fellow cricketer Rohit Sharma on Instagram last year during which he discussed Chahal's Tiktok videos and made casteist remarks. As his remarks had sparked outrage, Singh had issued an apparent apology and claimed that his statement was misunderstood. After an FIR was filed against him, he had approached the High Court to quash the case. Amid the case being heard by the judiciary, the Hisar police had summoned Yuvraj Singh for an investigation into the matter.

On Sunday, the former cricketer had arrived at the police station with five staffers, including his security personnel, from Chandigarh. The police had arrested him after three hours of questioning. However, after a short time, he was released on bail bonds. PTI quoted DSP Vinod Shankar of Hansi saying that Singh was released on bail after a few hours with compliance with the order from the High Court. Last week, the High Court has directed the police that, if the cricketer is arrested, he would be released on interim bail upon furnishing bail and surety bonds.

SP of Hansi Nitika Gahlaut said, "We only made a formal arrest and he was released on bail in compliance of the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court." However, on the other side, Rajat Kalsan, an advocate who filed a complaint against Yuvraj Singh, has said, "The police will submit its final report in some days in SC/ST court in Hisar and Yuvraj Singh will have to take regular bail from there. He will have to attend the hearings at the court in Hisar. We will do our best to prove his guilt since he had insulted the whole community."

Kalsan further said, "Since the bail was given to him under the SC/ST Act, we are challenging it in the Supreme Court and hopefully, you will see him behind bars." Last year, after the remarks, Yuvraj Singh has expressed his regret over his statement. He said, "I understand that while I was having a conversation with my friends, I was misunderstood, which was unwarranted. However, as a responsible Indian, I want to say that if I have unintentionally hurt anybody's sentiments or feelings, I would like to express regret for the same. My love for India and all its people is eternal."
