Why TN govt has decided to demolish 10,000 government school buildings?

In a move to construct new buildings to align with the requirement of enhancing the infrastructure in schools, the Tamil Nadu state government has decided to demolish over 10,000 government school buildings that are labelled to be in a dilapidated state. 

On Wednesday- March 30, Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has said that the damaged and ruined buildings of government schools will be demolished and they will be replaced with new buildings. In a statement, the minister said that the state government has been taking measures for developing school education and smart classrooms will be built to make children familiar will all sectors of learning. 

The school education department has been planning to construct 18,000 new classrooms and other infrastructure for schools at a cost of Rs 7000 crore under the Perasariyar Anbhazagan School Development Scheme in five years. It must be noted that during the financial year 2022-23, the state government has allotted an amount of Rs 1,300 crore for the department through the budget. 

Referring to the shocking death of a Class 2 student recently in Chennai after he was run over by a school bus on the school premises, the minister said that the government would take up the matter with the school authorities at a meeting of District Education officers scheduled on April 4. He further highlighted the government order and said that two school teachers have to be present while children disembark from the school bus and they must ensure that the buses move only after all the children deboarded and reached their classrooms.
