Will 'Thozhi' be a real companion for sexual assault victims?

The police department of Chennai city has on Friday launched 'Thozhi' initiative with the motive of rescuing the victims of sexual assault cases and to provide stable and periodical counseling to them. Adding in the line of awareness of women's safety and empowerment, this initiative was inaugurated by the city's police commissioner A K Viswanathan in a launch program hosted by the commissioner's office.

For this new initiative, the city police have appointed seventy policewomen who will be providing counseling to the victims of sexual assault cases including the cases that were filed under the POCSO act. By having been appointed with special duties, the seventy policewomen will be given pink sarees with the Nirbhaya logo.

The police sources have said that the city has 35 all-women police stations currently and two policewomen will be stationed in all these police stations to look after 'Thozhi' scheme and they will be directed to provide necessary assistance, counseling to the victims. They will also visit the victims at regular intervals from the case registration until the final verdict is pronounced.

The reports say that this is an initiative of the additional commissioner of police, North Chennai.
