Winning the West: DMK bowls out ADMK's SP Velumani at his home turf by remarkably sweeping Coimbatore!

DMK is in the victorious mode as the Tamil Nadu ruling party has been registering remarkable triumphs across the urban local bodies in the state. The counting has been underway for the votes that were cast last Saturday in what has become the first local body polls in the state after eleven years. Ever since the counting began, DMK has been leading across the state and its sublime form has been bowling out the rivals at crucial places.

In the 2021 assembly polls, the western districts of Tamil Nadu - commonly dubbed as the Kongu belt - was against the DMK as the party didn't have major breakthroughs and the crucial reason was that all senior leaders of ADMK belong to this belt and being their home turf, DMK had an ordeal of defeating them. However, in less than a year, the climate in these western districts has come in the favour of the DMK as the voters had overwhelmingly voted for the ruling party in the urban local body polls.

For MK Stalin, to throw more weight on his leadership, he must win the strongholds of ADMK - particularly the districts of Salem and Coimbatore. Coimbatore, being the home turf of ADMK leader SP Velumani, didn't grant a single MLA for DMK in the assembly polls and the ADMK has hoped to retain its support base in the district amid the intra-party leadership and political crises. The opposition party worked to prevent DMK's victory in these districts in the local body polls.

However, ADMK's play of preventing the DMK didn't last long as the election results have revealed that Coimbatore is now been swept by MK Stalin. It must be noted that with the view of winning Coimbatore, MK Stalin has deployed DMK Minister Senthil Balaji to Coimbatore for the local body polls. Senthil Balaji had camped and worked in the district to ensure that SP Velumani's dominance would come to an end. Ahead of the vote counting, it was believed that Coimbatore would vote for the ADMK.

It then came to light that the voters had a different plan in their minds by electing DMK to run the local bodies in the district. According to reports, SP Velumani's dominance in the district has come to an end as the ADMK is in the position that it can't even play majority in the Coimbatore Corporation. The DMK cadres are celebrating the victory from the West and they say that the people living in the Kongu belt has endorsed MK Stalin's leadership.

DMK Minister Senthil Balaji has accomplished the mission of defeating the ADMK in Coimbatore and as per the data from the state Election Commission, DMK has swept 90% of local bodies in Coimbatore, which has become a remarkable victory for the ruling party. In another shock for the ADMK, the DMK has captured a municipality that comes under the Thondamuthur legislative constituency, which is being represented by SP Velumani. Apart from Coimbatore, several ADMK strongholds had gone to the DMK.

In Edappadi Palaniswami's home turf of Salem, the ADMK has collapsed. DMK candidate Sivakami Arivazhalagan has won the race for Councillor in the 23rd ward of Needunsalai Nagar in Salem, the ward where Edappadi Palaniswami resides. Besides defeating the ADMK candidate in Edappadi Palaniswami's ward, the DMK has been nearing winning more local bodies in the entire district of Salem, which has been elusive for DMK for several years. Winning Salem would be a remarkable feather on MK Stalin's leadership cap.

According to the data from the state Election Commission, Of the 60 wards in Salem, DMK has a comfortable victory in 23 wards while the ADMK had won only in two wards. The voting at the rest of the wards has been underway and the ADMK has no sight of a satisfying victory. As of 12.30 pm, DMK leads in 1127 municipalities while ADMK leads in 273. The ruling party is leading in all the 21 municipal corporations. The wave of support for MK Stalin is clearly visible across Tamil Nadu that no opposition party has come close to the DMK in the majority of seats.
