'Namma Chennai' selfie point, which added more prominence to Marina Beach by being a popular stopover, has now become the victim of defacement as the selfie point was vandalized with people writing their names on it. The shocking display, which irked and disturbed the passersby, had drawn quick attention and the city's civic body had jumped into the action of cleaning the typography.
The matter was brought to light by a journalist on Saturday, who posted a picture of the defaced selfie point on social media and it can be seen that some youngsters were sitting on it. He took to Twitter and wrote, "Youth on top of the selfie point on Marina in Chennai. Just like other tourist locations, citizens have even scribbled their names over it." He also tagged the official Twitter handles of the Greater Chennai Corporation and the Commissioner of the Corporation in his tweet.
A day after the photo was posted, the GCC had replied back and said that the typography on the selfie point was cleaned. The Corporation has also filed a police complaint. The civic body wrote, "Namma Chennai typography is being cleaned. A police complaint has been filed. Thanks for bringing this to us. Public participation is core to Chennai's development."
A corporation official has said that the complaint is meant to be a deterrent. There is no way to protect public property unless the public put their mind to it. Speaking to a news agency, he further said, "We have also got instructions to repaint the typography. We will begin work this week with water-resistant paint." Several residents have urged the administration to take action against the people who were responsible for defacing the selfie point by writing their names on it.
The Namma Chennai selfie point was set up last year under the Smart City Mission. The structure, which is around 10-feet tall, was installed at a cost of Rs 22 lakh on the arterial Kamarajar Salai, opposite Queen Mary's College.
