Drawing statewide attention, the Tamil Nadu government has decided to shut down both the LKG and UKG classes in the government schools from the upcoming academic year. The development has come on Tuesday - June 7 and the decision was taken against the backdrop of various issues. The educational department has been taking measures to accommodate the existing teachers in other roles.

According to reports, the decision of shutting down the KG classes in the state-run schools was taken due to several issues including the appointment of teachers for these classes. Following the closure, the kindergarten classes will be shifted from the government schools back to Anganwadi centres across the state.

In 2018, LKG and UKG classes were introduced in the ADMK regime to increase the admissions of students in 2381 government schools of Tamil Nadu. Due to the pandemic decades for two years, the Department of Education took the decision of ending the classes. Teachers employed for these classes were also sent back to the elementary and middle schools where they had previously worked.

The teachers will be taking care of higher classes. The government has been taking various measures to increase the enrolment of students in government schools across the state. The department has also been implementing various welfare schemes in government schools. It has also been announced that incentives will be given to students in government schools in various regions.

The main reason behind bringing UKG and LKG classes into government schools came after the government considered that the children could continue their studies till Class 12. However, a senior official from the School Education Department said that the recruitment of teachers to take kindergarten classes was a big issue. He further said that in addition to the issue of recruitment, several government schools do not have enough space to take classes for LKG and UKG.
