You must know: Why TN Govt would seek explanation from Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan on surrogacy?

The Tamil Nadu Health Department would seek an explanation from the new parents, Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan on the birth of their babies. The development has come a day after Vignesh Shivan announced on social media that they have become parents to twin baby boys. It has been reported that the couple had welcomed their babies through surrogacy.

The star couple got married this June and when Vignesh Shivan announced the birth of babies, social media was flooded with speculation about the babies and even, there were discussions about their names. Such speculations have sparked a debate and it was reflected at a press meet with Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian.

On Monday, the health minister said his department would seek an explanation from the couple over the surrogacy. During a press meet, a reporter asked the minister if the couple who got married four months ago can conceive through surrogacy and whether there was a time restriction. Responding to the question, Subramanian said that the Directorate of Medical Services will be instructed to conduct an inquiry in this regard.

He said, "The legalities surrounding surrogacy are a topic of discussion. There is already an issue over the egg cells. As per the rules, an adult married woman aged between 21 and 35 years can donate her egg with the permission of her parents or husband. We will ask the director of medical services to inquire whether they (Vignesh Sivan and Nayanthara) followed due process".

In the midst of reports that the couple welcomed their babies through surrogacy, neither Vignesh Shivan nor Nayanthara gave official statements. According to reports, commercial surrogacy was allowed in India until a new law - The Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021, was passed in December 2021 and came into effect on January 25, 2022. The couple could have approached for surrogacy before December 2021 when commercial surrogacy was in practice.

As per the new law, India permits only altruistic surrogacy, which means the surrogate mother won't be given any remuneration or money except the medical expenses. Moreover, a surrogate mother has to be genetically related to the couple as per the new law. The new law also highlights that other than a couple, who have a medical indication necessitating gestational surrogacy, only an Indian woman who is a widow or divorcee between the age of 35 to 45 years can go for surrogacy.

As Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan were said to have welcomed their babies through surrogacy, the Tamil Nadu government has now decided to seek an explanation and inquire about the birth and whether they have adhered to the protocols prescribed by the surrogacy law. Besides sparking a surrogacy debate, the couple has been flooded with wishes from a sea of fans as they shared the first pictures on social media. A league of celebrities has also been wishing the couple on becoming parents.

On Sunday, Vignesh Shivan took to social media and wrote, "Nayan & Me have become Amma & Appa. We are blessed with twin baby boys. All our prayers, our ancestors' blessings combined with all the good manifestations made, have come together in the form of two blessed babies for us. Need all your blessings for our Uyir (life) and Ulagam (world)." In another Instagram post, Vignesh Shivan wrote, "I love you two and I love you three."

On June 9 this year, the lovely couple exchanged vows as they got married in a lavish ceremony that was held at Mahabalipuram, Chennai. Their wedding has been made as a documentary 'Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale' which will be released by Netflix. On the work front, Nayanthara was last seen on silver screen in the recently released movie 'GodFather' starred by Chiranjeevi and Salman Khan and helmed by Mohan Raja. She is also busy with 'Jawan' directed by Atlee and with 'Gold' helmed by Alphonse Puthiren. Vignesh Shivan is gearing up to direct Ajith Kumar in the untitled project 'AK 62'.
