Big honor for 'Soorarai Pottru' and 'Asuran': Proud and relishing news for the fans!

In what has become proud and relishing news for the ardent fans of Suriya and Dhanush, the 'at its best' movies Soorarai Pottru and Asuran have bagged a big, and indeed a deserved, honor as these two successful and remarkable Tamil movies had got the opportunity to be screened at the Golden Globes Awards 2021 for the Best Foreign Film category.

The global recognition for these two Tamil movies has come when the pictures had garnered massive reception across and beyond borders and recorded the blockbuster hit. Unlike Academy Awards, which restricts the number of entries coming from a country, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) allows more than one submission from a country. According to its website, 139 Foreign Language Films were eligible for Golden Globe consideration from 77 countries this year.

Significantly, of these 139 films, 37 were directed or co-directed by women. Ten multilingual films from India had got the opportunity to be screened at the Global Globes Award 2021 and these ten films are- Suriya starred 'Soorarai Pottru', Dhanush starred 'Dhanush', Lijo Jose Pellissery directorial Malayalam movie 'Jallikattu', Prateek Vat's 'Eeb Allay Ooo', Shyam Madiraju's 'Harami', Om Raut's 'Tanhaji', Chaitanya Tamhane's 'The Disciple', Anurag Basu's 'Ludo', Kislay's 'Just like that', and Bijukumar Damodaran's 'Trees Under the Sun'.

'Soorarai Pottru' has become one of the significant movies in Suriya's career and it has become the first big Tamil film to get released on the OTT platforms directly due to the closures of the theaters owing to the COVID-19 outbreak and restrictions. The movie was released on November 12 and while Suriya has produced the movie, 'Irudhi Suttru' fame Sudha Kongara had directed the movie, which is based on the life of Captain Gopinath, who was the founder of the low-cost airline Air Deccan.

While GV Prakash Kumar composed the music, Aparna Balamurali, Urvashi, Karunas, and Kaali Venkat had acted in the important roles.  The other Tamil movie to get the honor was the blockbuster 'Asuran', directed by Vetrimaaran. Dhanush had played the lead role in the movie, which is based on the Tamil novel Vekkai by writer Poomani and it was released in theaters in October 2019. The movie revolved around the caste inequalities in Tamil Nadu and it also has Manju Warrier, Teejay Arunachalam, Ken Karunas, and Adukalam Naren in the important roles.

The other South Indian movie to get the honor is 'Jallikattu', the Malayalam movie which got released in October 2019. Directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, the movie is about a buffalo that escapes from a slaughterhouse following which an entire village attempts to capture it. Besides getting the honor of getting screened in the Golden Globes Awards, Jallikattu is the only Indian movie that has made an official entry to the Academy Awards, under the Best International Feature Category.

Asuran has got global recognition at a high time when Dhanush has got the honor of working with the Russo Brothers- the directors of the Avengers series and Captain America: Winter Soldier. Last week, Netflix has made a massive announcement that Dhanush will be acting in the Hollywood movie 'The Gray Man' directed by the Russo brothers. Dhanush has joined the impressive and dramatic crew of 'The Gray Man' and he is the only Indian star on the cast so far and he will be joining Chris Evans, Ryan Gosling, Julia Butters, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, and Wagner Moura.

The Gray Man is based on American novelist Mark Greaney's debut novel that was released on the same name in 2009. The Gray Man will be adapted and released by Netflix as its original film and according to reports, the shooting has been expected to commence early next year and the budget of this movie has been estimated to be $200 million and it has been expected that the movie would hit the screens in the mid or at the end of next year. On the other hand, Asuran has become the only Tamil movie to get screened at the International Film Festival of India.
