Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, has shocked the world by changing the logo of the social media platform from the iconic blue bird to a simple ‘X’. The billionaire entrepreneur announced the rebranding on Monday, saying that X.com now redirects to Twitter.com and that the “interim X logo” would go live later that day. He also shared a photo of Twitter’s headquarters illuminated by a giant X.

Musk, who is also the founder of SpaceX and Tesla, acquired Twitter for $44 billion in October 2022, after expressing his interest in creating an “everything app” that would rival China’s WeChat. He said that Twitter was “an accelerant to creating X, the everything app” and that he had a vision for a platform that would integrate artificial intelligence, audio, video, messaging, payments and banking.

The rebranding comes amid a series of controversial changes and challenges that Musk has faced since taking over Twitter. He has implemented mass layoffs, cut costs, clashed with regulators and advertisers, and faced competition from Meta’s new social media app Threads. He has also been criticized for his erratic and provocative tweets, which have often sparked controversy and backlash.

Twitter users were quick to react to the new logo, with some expressing confusion, dismay or mockery, while others praised Musk for his bold move. Some users also shared memes and jokes referencing X-Men, SpaceX and other topics related to the letter X.

Twitter’s CEO Linda Yaccarino confirmed the rebranding on her account, tweeting “X is here! Let’s do this.” She also said, “It’s an exceptionally rare thing – in life or in business – that you get a second chance to make another big impression. Twitter made one massive impression and changed the way we communicate. Now, X will go further, transforming the global town square.”

“X is the future state of unlimited interactivity – centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we’re just beginning to imagine,“ she added.
