Dil Raju, of Sree Venkateswara creations, received nothing but trolls and memes after making the controversial statement that Vijay is the leading star in Tamil Nadu. Varisu, directed by Vamshi Paidipally and produced by Dil Raju, is scheduled for release on 12 January 2023, during the Pongal holiday, competing with Ajith's Thunivu.

Boney Kapoor's Bayview Projects produced Thunivu, and Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Movies will handle distribution. The controversy began after Dil Raju stated in an interview that he plans to soon meet Udhayinidhi Stalin and ask him to secure more theatres for the release of Varisu because Vijay is more popular in Tamil Nadu than Ajith. After Dil Raju's statement spread on social media, Ajith's fans were fueled with his unfortunate comment, and quite followed by memes and videos filled the scene and so many troll posts with pictures of Ajith and Vijay.

At a movie event in Hyderabad, Dil Raju voiced his displeasure with his viral remarks, saying, "The media misrepresented my words after they saw a 15-second excerpt from the full interview. I've received a lot of hostile comments because of a statement that has been twisted out of all recognition. There is still matter prior to and behind it. Everyone will understand if you see it completely. I had mentioned many of Ajith and Vijay's pluses in the full interview."

Dil Raju further said, " I am afraid to talk in front of the media. I haven't praised or degraded anyone. I support all good movies." he further added that he intends to be more cautious in the future when speaking to the press and media. Red Giant Movies, which is owned by Udayanidhi Stalin, is sending Varisu and Thunivu to theatres in Tamil Nadu. H. Vinoth and based on true events, was reportedly made for Rs. 100 crore.
