DMK launches the signature campaign! Will it add more pressure to BJP?

As announced earlier, Tamil Nadu Opposition party DMK has, on Sunday, launched the signature campaign against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Tamil Nadu and the party has scheduled to roll out the anti-CAA campaign till February 8th, 2020 during which the party has targeted to acquire more than 1 crore signature from the people of Tamil Nadu to showcase its oppose and to add pressure to the Central government to revoke the enacted controversial citizenship act.

DMK President Stalin had green flagged the campaign in Chennai and he called the party cadres and public to rise towards putting an end to the act. He launched the campaign in his legislative constituency Kolathur, Chennai and he directly approached the people and acquired their signs and support to voice against the CAA. While speaking in the campaign, Stalin said that the act is the divisive policy of the Central BJP party with the view of removing the attention from the crucial issues that have been lying before the nation. He accused the state ruling ADMK party and its ally PMK for backing and supporting the CAA in Parliament.

Stalin went for door to door campaign and acquired the signatures from the residents. DMK MP Kanimozhi had launched the campaign in Tuticorin and Dravidar Kazhagam leader K Veeramani launched it in Trichy. MDMK Chief and Rajya Sabha MP Vaiko took the charge in Chennai Harbour while Veteran Communist leader Nallakannu launched the campaign in Saidapet. After the state's capital had started the campaign, the party's district-level secretaries and functionaries have ignited the signature campaign across the state.

Stalin took the prospect of addressing the party's notion on the Union Budget and he stated the Budget carries no announcement to satisfy and to solace the poor and added the budget was filled with no concrete steps to increase the employment and reviving, accelerating the economy. He blamed the Centre's plans and decisions to hand over the public sector units to the hands of private corridors.

He further added that the DMK and the opposition parties had voted against the bill in the Parliament but the ruling ADMK and its ally PMK had voted in favor that had let the bill go through the lenient and comfortable passage in the Parliament. He stated that the enacted CAA had ignored the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees and Muslims from the neighboring countries in getting Indian citizenship.

On January 24th, the Opposition parties of Tamil Nadu have unanimously decided to hold a signature campaign against the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), and National Population Register (NPR) across the state next month. While addressing the reporters, Stalin said that the signatures received from the people during the campaign would be presented to Indian President Ram Nath Kovind as part of stressing the Central government to revoke the enacted amendment that was largely criticized as biased and against of the Indian constitution.
