'If Modi Ji speaks to Putin...': A hopeful appeal to PM Modi from Ukraine's envoy to India!

Amid being invaded by the Russian troops, Ukraine has been pitching for global voices to urge Russian President Vladimir Putin to pull back the forces from its neighbouring country. As the forces advance towards capturing the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, which had displayed that the ongoing conflict is escalating for a war, the UN Security Council had been discussing the tensions and while the world has been witnessing a human-made catastrophe, a Ukrainian diplomat has now expressed a hope that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention would give a breakthrough.

Ukraine's envoy to India Igor Polikha has sought India's urgent intervention. Addressing a press briefing in New Delhi, Polikha has on Thursday said, "India is a very influential global player. We are asking for a strong voice of India. By highlighting that the situation may get out of control, Polikha said Modi is one of the most powerful and respected world leaders. "You have a privileged, strategic relationship with Russia. If Modi Ji speaks to Putin, we are hopeful he will respond", Polikha added.

He further said, "India should be much more actively engaged, given the privileged relation India has with Russia. Not just for our safety, but of your own citizen's safety too, we need intervention of India." In his address, the Ukrainian envoy had referred to India's history and mythology to trace its role in diplomacy and non-aligned movement.

He said, "I'm dealing with India from my young student years and I know a lot about your history of diplomacy. You had such bright guys...like Chanakya approximately 2500 years back when on the major parts of Europe, there was no civilization." He also had referred to Mahabharata and said, "India was among the architects of the world-famous five principles, Panchsheel...that's why at this moment we are asking, pleading the support of India."

"Putin has launched a full-blown attack. They must stop Putin now. It is a case of blatant aggression..the Russian statement is cynical. They are not just attacking military installations but we have suffered civilian casualties", Polikha added. While Ukraine has sought Modi's intervention to speak with Putin, India had already reiterated its stand of staying away from direct intervention, something which was welcomed by Russia.

When the conflict had escalated, India had neither voiced in favour of the United States nor it had directly condemned Russia's advancement towards the Ukrainian territory. India has reiterated its stand urging a de-escalation of tensions and finding a solution diplomatically. India is one of the few countries that hasn't criticized Russia's decision of sending troops to Ukraine. At the recently-held UN Security Council meeting, India had called on all parties to exercise utmost restraint.

TS Tirumurti, India's permanent representative to the UN, said, "The immediate priority is a de-escalation of tensions taking into account legitimate security interests of all countries and aimed towards securing long term peace and stability in the region and beyond." India has also urged all sides to intensify diplomatic efforts to reach for an amicable solution.

Welcoming India's position on the conflict, Russia had commended India's approach with open arms. Roman Babushkin, the Russian envoy to India, said India's approach to be independent and balanced. Referring to TS Tirumurti's statement at the Security Council meeting, Roman said, "We welcome the independent position India has taken in the UN Security Council twice already which was expressed openly by the Indian External Affairs Minister and other officials."

He further said, "India's stance at the Security Council reflects our special and privileged strategic partnership and fully corresponds to Indian aspirations to enhance its status in global affairs." On the ties between both the nations, Roman said, "We continue our work with our Indian partners in defence. We have big plans and we hope that our partnership will continue further at the same level we are enjoying today." The Indian Ministry of External Affairs is yet to comment on Polikha's remarks on seeking India's intervention.
