The 69th National Film Awards 2023 announced on Thursday brought a double delight for the Tamil film ‘Kadaisi Vivasayi’ (The Last Farmer), directed by M. Manikandan. The film, which revolves around the life of an elderly farmer in a remote village, won the awards for Best Tamil Film and Best Supporting Actor for 85-year-old farmer named Nallandi

Manikandan, who is known for his critically acclaimed films such as ‘Kaaka Muttai’ and ‘Aandavan Kattalai’, expressed his happiness and gratitude in a heartfelt note. He dedicated the awards to his late protagonist Nallandi, who played the role of the farmer with remarkable authenticity and charm. He also thanked the villagers who supported him in making the film, the production houses that backed his vision, and the media that appreciated his work.

In his statement, Manikandan wrote, "I am extremely happy to learn that my film 'Kadaisi Vivasayi', which was celebrated by both the people and the critics alike, has won two National Awards at the 69th National Film Awards 2023. I thank the members of the jury for bestowing this huge honour upon my film. The awards will, without doubt, prove to be a motivating factor to make many more such films."

"At this juncture, I wish to remember my film's protagonist, the late Nallandi sir, who, despite his old age, acted tirelessly in my film. He breathed life into his character and made people celebrate the film. My heartfelt thanks also go to the people of the village who enabled me to make this film and to the production houses Vijaysethupathi Productions and 7CS Entertainments, which helped me take this film to the masses around the world,"

"I wish to extend my wholehearted gratitude to Makkal Selvan Vijay Sethupathi, who not only acted in the film, but also played a crucial part in enabling me to make this film. I wish to equally thank all the members of my unit, without whom this film wouldn't be what it is. Last but not the least, I wish to thank the media, which took this film to the people and all those who have been congratulating us for the honour. Thank you all once again for your love." he added.

‘Kadaisi Vivasayi’ is a poignant and humorous portrayal of the struggles and joys of a farmer who refuses to give up his land and his way of life. The film also raises important questions about the environmental and social impact of urbanization and modernization. The film was released on OTT platforms in 2020 and received rave reviews from both the audience and the critics.

The National Film Awards are considered to be the most prestigious awards in Indian cinema, and winning them is a matter of pride and honour for any filmmaker. Manikandan and his team have made Tamil cinema proud by winning these awards for their film that celebrates the spirit of a farmer.
