Reputed cricketer and commentator Dean Jones passed away at 59: Sachin, Kohli, and stars pay tribute!

Former Australian batsman and well-renowned cricket commentator Dean Jones has passed away at the age of 59 on Thursday in Mumbai due to cardiac arrest and the untimely demise had shocked the cricketing fraternity and his fans that he earned through his remarkable commentary. 

Dean Jones had a long association and he has marked an immense reputation from the Indian cricket fans during the course of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Jones was in Mumbai as part of the Star Sports commentary team for the ongoing IPL season and he was in the bio-bubble in a hotel. 

Being known for his exceptional style of commentary, he also shined as a batsman during his cricketing career. Dean Jones was part of the Australian team that won the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1987 under the captaincy of Allan Border. In a career spanning for a decade, Jones had played 52 test matches and 164 One Day Internationals for Australia. 

He had scored almost 10,000 runs in both the formats combined and he retired from test cricket and ODI in 1992 and 1994 respectively. Following his retirement, he shaped the rest of his life as a perfect and phenomenal commentator and he has developed an intimate relationship with India and its cricket fans through his commentary during the IPL seasons. 

According to reports, Dean Jones had suffered a massive heart attack at a hotel in Mumbai after 12 pm on Thursday. Jones was fondly known as one of the great ambassadors of the game associating himself with cricket development across South Asia. After the news about his demise broke out, condolences have been pouring from reputed players whose life was touched by Dean Jones. Star Sports India had issued its official statement on the passing of the legendary commentator. 

Taking to Twitter, Star Sports India said, "It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing away of Dean Mervyn Jones AM. He died of a sudden cardiac arrest. We express our deep condolences to his family and stand ready to support them in this difficult time. We are in touch with the Australian High Commission to make the necessary arrangements". 

 

"He was passionate about discovering new talent and nurturing young cricketers. He was a champion commentator whose presence and presentation of the game brought joy to millions of fans. He will be sorely missed by everyone at Star and his millions of fans across the globe", Star Sports added. Chennai Super Kings took to Twitter and paid its obituary and said, "Absolutely devastated to hear about the demise of Dean Jones. A colossal loss to the cricketing community. His connection to Chepauk will always be cherished. Deepest condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace". 

 

India's master blaster Sachin Tendulkar has paid his condolences to the deceased player. In his message, Sachin said, "Absolutely heartbreaking news about Dean Jones passing away. A wonderful soul taken away too soon. Had the opportunity to play against him during my first tour of Australia. May his soul rest in peace and my condolences to his loved ones".  Virak Kohli said, "Shocked to hear about the tragic loss of Dean Jones. Praying for strength and courage to his family and friends."

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma said, "Shocking news to hear about passing away of Dean Jones #RIP". Indian batsman Virender Sehwag said, "Saddened to hear the news of Dean Jones passing away. Still cannot believe it. Was one of my favourite commentators, he was on air in many of my landmarks. Had really fond memories with him. Will miss him".
