The suicide of a student: IIT appeals not to demoralize the institute!

After witnessing the series of protests in demanding justice for IIT student Fathima Latheef who committed suicide in the premises of IIT Madras on November 9th, 2019, the management of IIT Madras has appealed to the public on Friday to avoid spreading the rumors about the institute and to barricade the spread of trolls on the social media platforms, which, the management claimed, would demoralize the institution.

In its official statement, the institute has stated that the students, faculty, residents and staff members are deeply saddened by the untimely and unfortunate demise of Fathima Latheef and the events that have been happening aftermath of the incident. Through its statement, the management has claimed that the police department was informed about the suicide of the student immediately after the awareness of IIT authorities and further cited that the institute had fully extended its cooperation with the police department for investigations. 

While expressing its commitment in ensuring a fair play in the probe, the management of IIT has stated that the trolls and the rumors on the Social media platforms against the institute and its faculty members would deeply demoralize and tarnish the reputation of the institution. The statement further furnished that the premises mourn for the loss of a promising young student and asserted that the management of IIT Madras would be taking all the efforts on the physical and mental well being of our students, faculty, residents, and staffs who have been known for high quality, integrity, and fairness.

On November 9th, Fathima Latheef, a native of Kerala who was pursuing her first-year postgraduate course in Humanities and Social Services had allegedly committed suicide in the premises of the institute and while it was initially told that she could have hanged herself by citing low marks in the examinations, her suicide note that was in her mobile phone had revealed that she could have been harassed by her department and by the professors which have now ignited huge protests to demand action against the professors whom she had referred in her suicide note. The parents of the deceased student have submitted their petition to the Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan to demand fair and independent investigations.
