Thousands gathered against CAA in Chennai: Here's the latest update!

Despite the Madras High court has barricaded the Muslim outfits to march towards sieging the state assembly, about thousands of people largely belong to the Muslim community had gathered at Wallajah Road on Wednesday and rolled out the agitation against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), and National Population Register (NPR) and they raised slogans against these Central government policies amid the heavy deployment of the police personnel.

The protesters gathered at large numbers in Wallajah Road although the police department hadn't permitted them to protest. The reports say that the protesters from about 20 Muslim organizations and citizens' groups had urged the ruling ADMK government to adopt the resolution against the CAA, NRC, and NPR in the ongoing Budget session. The gathering had the presence of more than hundreds of women and some of the representatives from DMK, and MDMK parties have also protested with the Muslim organizations.

The protesters had threatened to siege the state assembly with the view of pressing the state government to adopt the anti-CAA resolution in the budget session. Earlier, the Muslim outfits had proposed to siege the assembly and the Madras High court bench o Tuesday had barricaded the outfits to carry out their protests before the assembly. 

However, on Wednesday, the reports have highlighted that the agitation would be carried out to siege the assembly as proposed by the Muslim outfits by relinquishing the court orders following which the Chennai city police had deployed thousands of police around the Secretariat and they had installed the barricades and roadblocks to restrain the agitation from getting advanced towards the assembly.

Upon being barricaded, the protesters gathered in Wallajah road in Chepauk and they raised the slogans against the CAA, NRC, and NPR and their protests have lasted for an hour after which they dispersed from the spot. As we reported earlier, the march has come at the crucial time when the protests at the Washermenpet, Chennai have been shaping the city as mini Shaheen Bagh and the agitations had hit the sixth straight day. Thousands of men and women have been staging intense protests in Washermenpet since Saturday against the CAA and they have unanimously been demanding the government to repeal the enacted CAA.

Along with Chennai, some of the cities in the state including Madurai, Erode, Tirupur, Tirunelveli had witnessed fierce protests against CAA on Wednesday. It must be recalled that the state's opposition party DMK has been demanding the government to pass and adopt the anti-CAA resolution. Earlier, the party has moved its petition to the House speaker to table the resolution in the current Budget session. However, the Speaker has denied the request to pass the resolution.
