VJ Chitra's death case: Why Hemnath was granted with bail?

After spending two months in prison, Hemnath, the husband of deceased artist VJ Chitra, has been granted conditional bail on Monday- February 15, with the condition that he shouldn't leave Madurai. Hemnath, who is a businessman based in Chennai, was arrested on December 15 on the charges of abetment of suicide.

VJ Chitra was one of the household names in Tamil Nadu as she was known for her appearance in soap-operas and hosting several TV shows. Putting everyone into shock, Chitra was found dead at a hotel room in Nazarathpet in Chennai on December 9. Her husband, whom she married in October 2020, was in her hotel room she had died. After her demise came to light, the probe was launched into her death and the police took Hemnath for further investigations.

The probe had affirmed that the actor had committed suicide and earlier in January, Chennai Police had submitted that the actor was put under pressure by her husband, which had led Chitra to commit suicide. During the probe, Hemnath maintained that he was not present with Chitra in her room when she committed suicide. Amid his claim, Chitra's parents, relatives, and friends have raised suspicion over her death and demanded the police to investigate Hemnath.

Following the investigation, the police had arrested Hemnath on December 15 on the charges of abetment of suicide. However, though he was arrested, the police didn't file any charge sheet against him. Hemnath had moved his bail petition to the court and in his bail plea, he had claimed that he did not force Chitra to quit acting and not suspected her character.

His bail plea came up for hearing on Monday during which Additional Public Prosecutor Prabhavathi presented to the court that Chitra's nail clip analysis came back without any incriminating evidence against the accused. Hemnath, who was under judicial custody, sought bail on grounds that his statutory period of 60 days was over. Under this ground, Justice Bharathidasan had granted conditional bail for Hemnath and the court had ordered him not to leave Madurai.

29-year-old Chitra rose to more popularity through her role 'Mullai' on the television series Pandian Stores. She also had acted in the movie titled 'Calls' directed by J Sabarish. The movie will be getting released soon in the theaters, after Chitra's demise.
