Viduthalai, the much-awaited film by acclaimed director Vetrimaaran, is all set to make a splash at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) 2023. But there’s a twist: the film that will be screened at the festival is not the same as the one that will hit the theatres later.

Viduthalai, which means freedom in Tamil, is a two-part epic that follows the lives of a group of rebels who fight against oppression and injustice in rural India. The film boasts of a stellar cast that includes Soori, Vijay Sethupathi, Bhavani Sre, Gautham Menon, Chethan, Rajiv Menon, Prakash Raj, Manju Warrier and Surya Vijay Sethupathi.

However, Vetrimaaran has not completed the shooting of the second part yet, and he still has some patchwork to finish.  It seems that the veteran latter comprised the footage of both parts into a single version, which will be premiered at the IFFR under the Limelight category. The film will be screened on 31st January and 3rd February, and the tickets are on sale now.

As per reports, the theatrical release will have an extended version, which will include the scenes that were left out in the festival cut. Vetrimaaran, who is known for his realistic and hard-hitting films like Aadukalam, Visaaranai and Asuran, has promised that Viduthalai will be a thrilling and engaging experience for the audience.

Viduthalai is a joint production of RS Infotainment, Grassroot Film Company and Red Giant Movies. The film has music by the legendary Ilaiyaraaja, cinematography by Velraj and editing by Ramar. Thunaivan, a short story by B. Jeyamohan, served as inspiration for the movie. The first part of the movie opened in theatres all over the world on March 31, 2023.

Meanwhile, Soori, who plays the lead role in Viduthalai, is in Rotterdam currently to attend the premiere of the film and another Tamil film, Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai, directed by Ram.  Soori, who is known for his comic roles, has undergone a drastic transformation for Viduthalai, and he has received praise from Vetrimaaran and Vijay Sethupathi for his performance.
