Filmmaker Vetrimaaran and producer Elred Kumar under his banner of RS Infotainment, bring us the first installment of their period crime thriller film Viduthalai. The silver screen witnessed an intense clash of titans as Vetrimaaran's Viduthalai locked horns with Simbu starrer Pathu Thala.

The air was thick with anticipation as movie buffs eagerly waited to see which film would come out on top. Soori and Vijay Sethupathi play the main archetypes in Viduthalai. Thunaivan, a short story by B. Jeyamohan, served as inspiration for the movie. The movie opened in theatres all over the world on March 31, 2023. 

A police officer named Kumaresan is enlisted to track down and apprehend Perumal "Vaathiyaar," the leader of a separatist group. Red Giant Movies is handling distribution in Tamil Nadu, while Ahimsa Entertainment is handling distribution in the United Kingdom and Europe. Ilaiyaraaja composed the score, and R. Velraj shot the film. After witnessing the awe-inspiring first 10 minutes of a movie shot in a single, uninterrupted take, film buffs were left amazed.

Yet another interesting element is the music composed by Ilaiyaraaja, where he collaborates with Vetrimaaran for the first time. Besides Soori and Vijay Sethupathi, the movie has also roped in Gautham Vasudev Menon, Bhavani Sre, Prakash Raj, Rajiv Menon, and Chetan in important roles. Bharadwaj Rangan, the famed film critic says that "This may be the first time a socio-political movie is being served in two installments." in his Twitter review.

Meanwhile, Simbu's Pathu Thala is to be released on March 30th, a day before the debut of Viduthalai, marking a remarkable clash to witness, 'Pathu Thala' has reportedly earned nearly Rs 7 to 8 crores in Tamil Nadu on the opening day,  as the two films went head to head at the box office, the excitement was palpable as the screens filled up with eager movie-goers, all hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars.
