In August 2019, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the Central government had revoked the article from Jammu and Kashmir that provided and guaranteed the special status for the state for the past seven decades. The government had bifurcated the state into two union territories. The abrogation process had encountered the imposition of severe restrictions in the state and detaining hundreds of political leaders who have been under detention currently and so are the restrictions.
